Clay Blair, Jr. (1925-1998) was born in Lexington, Virginia. He volunteered for submarine service in World War II. His career in journalism began when he started at Time-Life Corporation in 1949. During this time he also wrote well-received non-fiction books on Admiral Rickover, the atomic submarine Nautilus, and the hydrogen bomb. Robert G. Fergusson was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy (USMA) in 1936 and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant of Cavalry. During World War II (WWII), he served with the Pacific Coastal Frontier unit at San Francisco from 1939-1942; with the Hawaiian Artillery in 1941, and commanded the 7th Reconnaissance Squadron (Armored), 7th Motorized Division from 1942-1943.
